Privacy Policy

Last updated: 16 October 2026

This policy explains what personal information The Plate Shop collects when you use theplateshop.net or order from us, why we need it, who we share it with and what your rights are. We only collect what we need to make, deliver and support your order.

Who we are

The Plate Shop ("we", "us") is the data controller for the personal information described in this policy. If you have any questions about it, or want to use any of your rights, contact us:

  • Email: theplateshop@hotmail.com
  • WhatsApp: message us

What we collect

When you place an order

  • Your name, email address and phone number
  • Your delivery address and postcode, if you choose delivery
  • The registration number and plate options you order, and any notes you add
  • Whether you choose collection, delivery or fitting, and what you paid

Payments are handled by Stripe. Your card details go straight to Stripe and are never seen or stored by us. Stripe gives us a record of the payment, such as the amount, the date and the last four digits of the card.

Documents for road-legal plates

By law, number plate suppliers must check that a customer is entitled to the registration on road-legal plates. If you order road-legal plates, we will ask to see proof of your identity (such as a driving licence) and proof of entitlement to the registration (such as the V5C logbook or certificate of entitlement), and keep a record of the sale as the DVLA requires.

When you contact us

If you email us or message us on WhatsApp or Instagram, we keep the messages and the contact details you use so we can reply and help with your order.

When you browse the site

Your basket is saved in your own browser (using local storage) so it is still there if you leave and come back. It is not sent to us until you check out, and you can clear it at any time by emptying your basket or clearing your browser data. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies.

Why we use it

Under UK data protection law we need a lawful basis for using your information. We rely on:

  • Contract: to make your plates, take payment, text you when your order is ready, arrange delivery or fitting, and deal with any problems or returns.
  • Legal obligation: to carry out the identity and entitlement checks required for road-legal plates, and to keep financial records for tax purposes.
  • Legitimate interests: to reply to your messages, keep the website secure and prevent fraud.

We do not send marketing messages, and we never sell your personal information.

Who we share it with

We only share your information with the services we need to run the shop:

  • Stripe: processes card payments and sends your receipt.
  • Netlify: hosts this website and processes orders when you check out.
  • Delivery couriers: receive your name, address and phone number if you choose delivery.
  • Google Fonts and Squarespace: supply the fonts on this website, so your browser connects to them and they receive your IP address.
  • WhatsApp and Instagram (Meta): only if you choose to contact us there.

We may also share information where the law requires it, for example with the DVLA, the police or HMRC.

Some of these providers are based in, or store data in, the United States. Where that happens, your information is protected by safeguards recognised under UK law, such as the UK–US data bridge or standard contractual clauses.

How long we keep it

  • Order and payment records: 6 years, as required for tax and accounting.
  • Records of road-legal plate sales and the documents checked: 3 years, as required by the DVLA.
  • Messages you send us: up to 2 years after your last order or message, unless they form part of an order record.

After that we delete or anonymise your information.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you
  • ask us to correct anything that is wrong or incomplete
  • ask us to delete your information, where we no longer have a legal reason to keep it
  • object to, or ask us to restrict, how we use your information
  • ask us to send your information to you or another company in a usable format

To use any of these rights, email us at theplateshop@hotmail.com. We will reply within one month. There is no charge.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can try to put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

Keeping your information safe

The website uses a secure (HTTPS) connection, card payments are handled entirely by Stripe, and only the people who run The Plate Shop can access your order details.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we use your information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
